Today and for millions of years all life on this planet has been powered by solar energy. The last 200 years have seen an energy "bubble" as one species has exploited fossilized solar energy. Liquid fossil fuels have shaped our current ideas of transportation. Roughly 10 times more commerce is moved by water than on land. Commercial solar-electric marine transportation can start to return that mode of transportation to sustainable power, courtesy of our very own Sun.

Come hear about the development of practical solar marine transportation. Emphasis will be on Solar Sal 44 - the first ever 100% Solar Powered USCG inspect passenger vessel. She is currently giving tours on the Hudson River in Upstate New York.

  • about Captain David Borton, Ph D, of Sustainable Energy Systems, Inc. has developed several solar technologies throughout his lifetime including solar thermal and concentrating photovoltaic power systems. In 2012 he devoted his expertise to marine propulsion. Since then he has created 5 solar boats, ranging from 16 to 44 feet, with more in the works. All of these get 100% of their power from the sun without any auxiliary fossil fuel power. David is a certified as an American Boat and Yacht Council Marine Systems Electrical Technician, a US Coast Guard Credentialed Master, and has a Patent Pending on 100% solar powered electric boats.
