This summer, the Port Townsend Pocket Yachters organized what turned out to be a "happening" event—the Salish 100 small-boat cruise from Olympia to Port Townsend, which attracted boaters from all across North America. Almost 200 boats signed up, including a fleet of 20 larger support vessels, making the Salish 100 by far the largest small-boat cruise anywhere in the world. Why would 200 boat owners want to cruise the length of Puget Sound together, and how did it go? (Why do so many folks want to cruise aboard small boats in the first place...and is this a sign that small boats might be in your future?) Marty Loken, who organizes events for the Pocket Yachters and also serves as Associate Editor of Small Craft Advisor magazine, shares the whole, colorful Salish 100 story, and offers a personal review of the best small boats available for camp-cruising adventures like the Salish 100.
