Learn the traditional methods of steam bending various parts of a wooden boat, including framing, planking, coamings and more. This demonstration will include all aspects of steam bending, from setting up the steam box, choosing different species of wood, to troubleshooting reasons for breakage.

Japanese Boat Building Techniques

Japanese boats are built without caulking; all seams are watertight. Boatbuilders fit the seams using a series of specialized saws along with several other techniques. Planks are edge-nailed to each other rather than through-fastened to frames. Holes are piloted with a unique set of chisels. Douglas Brooks will demonstrate these traditional techniques, fitting a pair of planks and then edge-nailing them.
